NATIONAL HISTORY CLUB HONORS MILLBROOK TEACHER

In the Spring 2007 issue of the National History Club newsletter, the club honors Millbrook High teacher Lindy Poling as one of five History Club Advisors of the Year. Ms. Poling will receive a copy of Churchill, written by Winston Churchill’s granddaughter Celia Sandys, and a certificate of appreciation from the NHC for her exceptional commitment to history education and the mission of the National History Club. The newsletter includes an article written by Ms. Poling about Millbrook High School’s Bridges Newsletter Club which is a charter member of the National History Club. DECA Club

s The DECA club had an outstanding performance at the district Marketing Competitive Events Conference yesterday.   We are in a large and very competitive district and there were over 600 students at Cary Town Center competing yesterday.   Can you imagine?   I was very proud of the entire group from Millbrook.   If you have any of these students, please congratulate them on their accomplishments.

Mock Team
s 11/20 Millbrook's Mock Trial team participated in Regional Competition in Charlotte on Saturday.  Out of 10 teams, our team placed second.  Our team members received a total of 5 individual awards:  Tripp Green received three awards and Bill Armstrong received two awards.  The other Mock Trial team members are Andrew Owens, Mark Skava, Justin Smith, Ben Thirakul, Beatrice Campbell, and Laura Green.  These students are to be congratulated for doing a wonderful job.

s 11/16 Congratulations to Katherine Adams who was also selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award & Conference.

s N.C. Center for Voter Education is pleased to announce that Tan Tran of Millbrook High School is a winner for the "Go Vote 06 PSA Contest!"

s 10/30 Capital City Band Expo
 
On Saturday, October 28, Millbrook High School's Marching Band competed in the 11th Annual Capital City Band Expo.  The News & Observer reports "Perhaps no band in the competition pushed the envelope as much as Raleigh's Millbrook High School, with its presentation 'The Power of One.' . . . there were element of theatre and 'scene' changes . . . a nd . . . The piece was layered with voices as disparate as Neil Armstrong's words when he made his first step on the moon and snippets from Martin Luther King Jr's 'I Have a Dream' speech.  The Marching Wildcats swept the event with 5  First Place awards
Drama Department
s 10/24 From Mr. Kotzian - Students from Millbrook High School's Drama Department are taking their experience to another level as they prepare to become extras in an upcoming episode of One Tree Hill which will be filmed here in Raleigh later this month.  Layton Sheppard, Jimi Hansen, Savannah Core, and Marshae Wilson stood in the long lines to meet the casting director and secured a part to something that will be fun and educational at the same time.  They also walk away with a pay check!  We congratulate these guys and can't wait to hear about their experiences...and see them on TV!

s 11/16 Anna Norris, a Millbrook student, is featured in the fall newsletter for Urban Ministries of Wake County for work that she did in pursuit of her Girl Scouts' Gold Award.

s 11/08 Congratulations to the Dnae Henderson, Megan Petcavich and Lisa Huynh for being nominated for the Violet Richardson Award.
 
Each student will submit an application to the Soroptimist International Club in Raleigh, NC.  Each student will be considered for the local club level of competition. 
 
Students are nominated based on their volunteer efforts, such as:  fighting drugs, crime and violence,cleaning up the environment, and working to end discrimination and poverty.  Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest.
Student Achievement

s 10/23 - Senior D'nae Henderson has been selected as a semifinalist in the 43rd annual Achievement Scholarship competition.  She was chosen from more than 130,000 applicants nationwide.  D'nae joins 11 other WCPSS high school seniors and is one of 1,600 to be recognized nationally at this level. 

D'nae will will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for one of 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth some $2.5 million. She will demonstrate  a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by Mrs. King and earn SAT scores that confirm the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test performance.  Millbrook is proud of D'nae and wishes her well in this endeavor!
ATHLETICS
s 10/09 Congratulations to all MHS athletes and coaches!  On September 27, 2006, Millbrook High School received its 3rd NCHSAA Sportsmanship Awards Certificate of Recognition  for having a an ejection free year during the 2005-06 school year. 
Mrs. King, Coach McInnes and the entire administrative team are extremely proud of our athletes and coaches for their exceptional behavior both on and off the playing field!  Step Inside and Feel the Pride!

s 10/09 Twenty-nine students at MHS have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. Read announcement
Band
s 10/09 This past weekend at Wakefield High School the Millbrook High School Marching Band was one of the top scoring bands of the day despite the performance conditions.  They finished the day winning 2nd place Color Guard, 1st place percussion, 1st place marching, 1st place music, 1st place general effect, 1st place drum major and 1st place in their Class.  Millbrook's very own Sharlee Neubert finished the day with the top drum major score.

s 10/05 This past weekend the Millbrook High School Marching Wildcats traveled to Clayton High School where they represented Millbrook High School with pride.  They won 3rd place visual, 1st place music, 1st place general effect, and won 1st place in the AAA class.  The band would like to thank all the parents, teachers, and administration for their support.
Erika Helms, a 17-year-old rising senior at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, is spending her summer working with Amy Abernethy, M.D., a member of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and specialist in palliative care. Helms and 21 other high school students from across the Triangle are working with members of the cancer center for six weeks as part of the Summer on the Edge program. Read story

NEW YORK, NY (AUGUST 8, 2006) – Lindy Poling, a social studies teacher and department chair at Millbrook High School in Raleigh has been named North Carolina History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America. Full Story

Highlight on Mr. Matt Fisher

June 20, 2006

Assistant Principal Matt Fisher was featured in the April 2006 QST:  Official Journal of ARRL.  Fisher participated in an SKN on New Year's Day working with over 340 other amateur radio operators to bring the "magic of Morse code to the airways."  Mr. Fisher says, "I had loads of fun working stations from all walks of life. I really enjoyed working a station, made up of Heathkit gear and a spark key, from Port Huron, Michigan. My first SKN was worth dusting off my old key and spending most of the evening testing and practicing.  -- WW4Z" 

2005 Millbrook Graduate Finalist on So You Think You Can Dance!

June 21, 2006

Martha Nichols, a 2005 MHS graduate, earned a spot in the finals of the TV hit So You Think You Can Dance!   Martha was a regular at Winterfest while she was a student at MHS.  Tune in as Martha competes against 9 other female dancers and puts Raleigh, North Carolina and Millbrook High School centerstage in the artistic world of dance.

  • Congratulations to the Counseling Staff of Millbrook High School who was awarded the ¼ Carat Award (Level One) from the American School Counseling Association National Model on August 19, 2005. “The National Model for School Counseling Programs will help school counselors become one vision and one voice for students’ academic success” (Pam Gabbard, former ASCA President).

  • Millbrook Students EXCEL!!! SAT Results for 2004-05 are in and Millbrook High Schools students showed the MOST IMPROVEMENT of any school in the county, with a 34 point gain over the 2003-04 scores

September
  • Congratulations to the following students who took AP Exams in May 2005 after completing challenging college-level courses at Millbrook High School. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student's performance on AP exams.

    Of this year's award recipients at Millbrook High School, Bradley Brown and Matthew Spivey qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award. Those students qualifying for the AP Scholar Award are Brenda Burton, Jasdeep Garcha, Brianna Vey, Matthew Weiss and Jeffrey Whiteside. Congratulations to all our students! Read details.

  • National Merit Scholarship News!!

    Congratulations to Gregory Barnett for being among some 3,000 outstanding National Achievement Scholarship Program participants being referred to U.S. colleges and universities.
    Congratulations to James Mackintosh and Matthew Spivey for being recognized as Commended Students in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program.

  • Our Millbrook HS Marching Band participated in their first competition on Saturday at Wakefield HS – The 2005 Heart of Carolina Marching Band Invitational. It was a long and hot day and we are very proud of our students and their effort. Here are the results:

NOVEMBER
Millbrook High School is among the top five fundraising teams for all of the WCPSS school teams!!! MHS raised an amazing $2,082.00 to help fund research to find a cure for diabetes!!
Thanks to Debbie Robinson (DECA SPONSOR) and Wendy Davis (Jr Class and World Culture Club advisor) and their students who have helped to make a difference for the more than 21 million Americans with diabetes!!

Millbrook's Mock Trial team competed in State Competition over the weekend. The team won one round. Sacha Feinman and Mark Skvara won individual awards. The team represented Millbrook well against tough competition. Other members are Tripp Green, Bill Armstrong, Shane Onuma, Nicole Fryer-Nesbitt, Meghan Spears, and Philip Wentworth.
