Cross Country

Last fall the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had a successful season, filled with memorable performances by a number of different runners.  Although they had lost three all-state runners from 2006, the 2007 cross country team benefited from the hard work during the summer of runners such as captains David Foltz, Lizz Roution, and Greg Williams to prepare for the season.  Running up to 50 miles a week, these runners made great improvements from the pervious year.  Senior Stephen Simms (17:33), sophomore Stephen Townsend (17:34) and senior Lizz Roution (19:58) logged the fastest times for Millbrook in the 3.1 mile races.  Success by Freshmen Allora Burke (21:56), Amber Buckalew (21:56) and Alex Wheaton (18:20) and sophomores Sammee Everling (22:56), Daniel Buchenberger (18:10), and Drew Holley (18:27), promise that Millbrook will be solid for several years to come.

Girls Track and Field

Although only halfway through their season, the girls’ track and field team has already made this a memorable season.  With a good balance of new and experienced runners, this group worked very hard in the off season and the hard work is starting to pay off!  So far junior Tiffanie Downing has had the most memorable performance of the year.  On March 15th, Tiffanie was able to represent Millbrook in two events in the Indoor National Championship- the 60 meter and 200 meter dash.  Her time of 25.44 in the 200 was the 14th fastest indoor time ever in the state of North Carolina.  In addition to Tiffanie’s, Chinwe Anumudu, Hannah DeGraffinreed, Anna Thirakul, Katherine Adams, Madison Tessener, and Roshel Bygrave have all qualified for regionals in individual events.

Shekanah Solomon- This is Shekanah’s second year on the team, and first as a thrower.

The 2008 Millbrook Women’s Soccer program has made great strides toward sustained success in the Cap-7 conference.  We are returning 10 of our 11 starters from last season, and have already eclipsed last year’s win and scoring totals.  We are starting conference play and have a dedicated senior class leading a very youthful and exciting team.  We have girls from 9th-12th grade on the team, and the majority of the team is freshman and sophomores.  But it isn’t only the future that is bright for Millbrook soccer, it is the PRESENT! In an effort to reach out to our community and future soccer players we would like to cordially invite all youth soccer players to come to our match on Wednesday March 26th at 4:30 and 6:30 pm free of charge when wearing their team jersey and accompanied by a paying adult. One adult can bring up to 3 youth players. We also invite all middle school soccer players from our feeder schools to our matches on Wednesday April 10th at 4:30 and 6:30 pm free of charge.  All players should wear some article of clothing from their middle school to show their affiliation with their school.  Finally we are allowing all Millbrook High School students to attend the matches on Monday April 21st in support of senior night.  The matches are at 4:30 and 6:30 pm and the seniors will be recognized during half time of the varsity match.  We ask for your support as we make a push for the 2008 State Play-offs.  Go Wildcats!

Filled with both senior leaders and freshman newcomers, the Millbrook Wildcat Wrestling team has been working hard thus far in the 2007-2008 season. The coaches for the Wildcats are Head Coach Scott Saby and his assistants Bill Churchwell and Ford Baker.  Led by captains Jamal Williams, Dustin Bennett, and Tim Bumpers, the wildcats have earned a 7-7 overall record, along with a 2-1 Cap 7 Conference record.  Jamal Williams, last years lone state place winner (6th, 135lbs), has earned himself a record of 7-2 this year.  The other two captains, Tim Bumpers and Dustin Bennett have each earned themselves records of 21-2 and 6-5 respectively. Freshman Will Burton (103 lbs) and Jeremy Hawthorne (119 lbs) have both played key roles on the team starting as underclassmen.  Sophomores John Ries (112 lbs) and Scott Gray (135 lbs) look to work hard in the wrestling room and improve on a successful freshman campaign.  Juniors Cooper Boyce (125 lbs), Matt Brown (130 lbs), Jason Knight (145 lbs), Kyle Smith (171 lbs) and Carl Bauknight (189lbs) all look to play very key roles now as upperclassman starters.  Besides the captains, Seniors Marcel Collymore (160 lbs) and Kenneth Lewis (285lbs) are both working hard to help the team and have great finishes to their high school wrestling careers.  Other wrestlers that have seen varsity mat time and have been a vital part of this year’s team include; Josh McKenney, Nick LaScala, David Brumbaugh, Henry Zaremba, Winston Norton, Parker Stacks, Noah Esguerra, Brandon Ciereck, Jeremy Macon, Austin Merritt, Jacob Farrell, and Jason Peterson. All of these young men have been able to step in the lineup when called upon and are looking to work hard in the off season to be the leaders of the future of our program.

Now that the Christmas break is behind the team we look forward to stepping it up a notch and cruise into the second half of the season full throttle. Here are some home events to look forward to; a quad on Saturday, January 12th at 10am along with senior night Wednesday, January 23 against Wake Forest-Rolesville starting at 7pm. After dropping a heart breaking loss to Sanderson on January 3rd, the team looks to finish strong in the Cap 7 Conference.  The team is also looking to make a strong showing at the regional tournament in February and qualify some wrestlers for the state tournament the following week.

November Athletic Highlights

Football Teams Enters the NCHSAA State Play-offs with a Bang

Friday night at West Johnston High marked the second straight victory in which the Millbrook Wildcat Football team scored 60 or more points, and dominated the entire game.  Although it started out as a video game-like score fest with a 35-24 halftime score, the Millbrook defense held West to seven points in the second half and the offense went on to score 26 more.

Millbrook's offense was lead by the "three amigos," Jamal Williams, Kuwon Eldridge, and Brian Kass.  Eldridge finished the game with 241 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while Williams added 109 yards rushing and 145 receiving with three scores.  Kass was 7 of 12 passing for 196 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 58 yards and two scores.

"We are playing good team football and peaking at the right time.  If we can keep it up, it should make for an exciting finish- hopefully in early December!" said Assistant Coach Anthony Sullivan.

Men’s Basketball Team Highlights

The Wildcats will be lead by four seniors:
Dominique “Mr. Defense” Williams at the point guard spot. Joe “Hops” Houpe at the power forward at 6’4. Greg “Sweat Box” Schammel at the Center at 6’5. Mike “Energy” Cobb at shooting Guard. “We are working tremendously hard on defense and rebounding. This team has great team unity and believes in each other. I have great expectations for this team. If they keep working this hard, the sky is the limit.” commented Associate Head Coach Chris Davis.

Wresting Team seeks another Cap-7 Title
Wrestlers to watch:
Jamal Williams 35-11 (06-07 6th place)
Tim Bumpers 40-9 (06-07 State Qualifier)
Dustin Bennett 18-9 (06-07)

Expectations are high, as several new candidates will have an opportunity to compete for spots on this year’s team during the 2007-2008 Season.  The team is focused on defending the Cap 7 Conference title and earning a dual team playoff birth.

Women’s Basketball Outlook

The women's team returns many starters from last year's CAP 7 runner-up team.  We have high expectations for competing for the Conference, Sectional, and Regional championships.  Although we have a very tough schedule (one of the toughest in the state) we are looking forward to the challenges of this season.

Junior Varsity Volleyball
This season has brought a lot of new faces to the program. With new coach Jessica Hinnant and ten new players, this year promises lots of growth. Our returners include Nada Milkovich and Arianna Earle, co-captains, as well as Allie Gross and Gillian Cronin. We have spent countless hours in the gym preparing for a great season of volleyball, and we look forward to seeing our fans on the bleachers!
Men's Varsity Soccer
Sept. 12, 2007
The Men’s Varsity Soccer team has impressed many this year by overcoming the loss of 16 seniors from last year’s team. The team is being led by the only two returning players, Ferrety Sousa and David Brown. Both were voted unanimously as captains. David Brown leads the defense with his role as sweeper and Ferrety has shown great skill at forward with multiple goals and assists this year. This year’s team is getting better and better with every game, with an overall record of 3-2. The team this year consists of five seniors who have played soccer for Millbrook all four years of their high school careers. Promising young talent comes in the forms of the three freshmen who made the team, Austin Dietz, Michael Costa, and Conner Dingman, and the numerous sophomores who moved up from Junior Varsity last year. As a team we are focusing on working together and making up for our over all lack of experience with superior skill and determination. Most people would label this year as a “rebuilding” year, but should prove to be a fruitful year and definitely successful.
