On January 24 Millbrook High School graduated over thirty seniors in our annual mid-year graduation.  We send a special thanks to Superintendent Del Burns, Assistant Superintendent Ann Hooker, and District 3 Board Member Kevin Hill for attending our ceremony.  Their presence made our new graduates feel very special.  We have other good news to share.  US History and Economics teacher Gene Kilkoski was recognized in December at the Office of the State Treasurer as a finalist for the 2006 - 2007 Economics Educator of the Year for the State of North Carolina.  Mr. Kilkoski teaches AP Economics and has earned numerous recognitions over the years.  Last spring he was inducted into MHS Service Club.  School Counselor Carla Allen co-wrote a proposal "Preventing Students from Dropping Out of School" which was accepted for presentation at the National Dropout Prevention Institute in Daytona Beach, Florida.  Congratulations to Ms. Allen for her hard work.  The following students have been selected to attend the Leadership Conference sponsored by the North Raleigh Rotary Club:  Blair Ellis, Amanda Gorman, Nicholas Orbin, Brandon Pascoe, Danielle Garzon, and Katie Waldhour.  These students went through a rigorous application and interview process and will join other North Carolina students from around the state.  We are proud they will represent our school.  Finally, the Millbrook Madrigal Singers have been recommended by the President of the North Carolina Music Educators Association to represent the State of North Carolina at a music festival being held in Vienna, Austria in June 2009 to celebrate Joseph Haydn's life.  This is an invitation only event in which you most be recommended by state school conductors.  We are proud of our chorus teacher Megan Bender and her excellent group of performers.

The rest of this spring we will finish writing our School Improvement Plan.  Our school improvement chairs Bruce Mamel and  Whitney Burton have spent the bulk of this year working with faculty and staff (and parent reps Margaret Frucht and Denise Kirkland) in order to create a school plan that will guide our professional efforts for the next three years.

Millbrook continues to have so many things to be proud of so indulge me if this sounds boastful.  The rest of this semester will fly by especially for juniors and seniors.  I encourage all students to stay academically focused, to demonstrate positive character traits in as many ways and as often as possible, and to finish this semester strong.

Proud to be a Wildcat,

Dana King
