From the Principal’s Desk:
August 7 , 2007

Dear Millbrook Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year.  We are excited and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of nearly 2400 of you who represent our student body.  “Step inside and feel the pride” all who are now Wildcats.

The first day of school is Monday, August 27, 2007.  Give yourselves extra time if you drive or carpool to school to get use to our traffic flow.  Please note that first period class begins at 7:25AMThe school day ends at 2:18 PM.  Information related to the opening of school is included in this packet.  The purpose of this mailing is to help you be well informed and ready for school on the first day.  There is a lot of work to be done and every day counts.

If your student will be riding the bus to school, please refer to our website www.mhs.wcpss.net.  The most up to date route information is posted there.  This information may change between now and August 27 so check back regularly.

Your class schedule is enclosed.  Please review it now to insure it is correct.  Changes will be made in your schedule for the following reasons only:

  • The student is in a course for which he/she does not have the required prerequisites.
  • The student is in a course that he/she has already passed.
  • The student has a schedule conflict that was not resolved before schedules were printed.
  • The student is in a course as a result of an error in the input of a course number.
  • The student does not have a schedule that fills four (4) periods.

If your schedule has one of the errors listed above, please submit a schedule change request online at www.span.wcpss.net.  Revised schedules will be available at the schedule walk through and on the first day of school.

An informal Schedule Walk Through will be held on Thursday, August 23 from 4:00 – 6:00PM.  Students and parents may tour the buildings to locate classrooms and ask questions.  Student guides, counselors, and administrators will be available to assist you.  Parents of students who are new to Millbrook High are invited to a brief New Parent Orientation in the lower cafeteria.  The first orientation will be 4:10-4:20PM and the second orientation will be 5:00-5:10PM.  You will have an opportunity to meet counselors and administrators who will be working with you during your time at MHS.

The annual Fall Open House will be on Thursday, September 20 at 6:30PM.  Mark your calendars now and plan to attend this important event that allows parents the opportunity to walk through their student’s daily schedule and meet the teachers and discuss briefly classroom activities.

During the first week of school two important handbooks will be distributed to all students.  Teachers will be devoting a portion of class time to review the information contained in these documents, and parents are asked to read both handbooks when your child brings them home.

  • The 2007-2008 Millbrook High School Student Handbook contains the calendar of events for the entire school year along with a wealth of information specific to Millbrook’s personnel, practices, policies and procedures.  This is an important handbook to keep readily accessible throughout the year for reference on a wide range of topics.
  • The 2007-2008 Wake County Public School System Student/Parent Handbook contains information regarding our school system’s policies and procedures that directly affect students, parents, and staff members.

Only students who have purchased MHS locks for $5.00 each will be issued lockers.  ALL OTHER LOCKS WILL BE REMOVED.  Locks may be purchased during the Schedule Walk Through on August 23 or during lunch periods the first week of school and throughout the year.  Lockers in the 200 building are for freshman only and may be purchased from Ms. Nobles in Room 205.  Locks for the Pods and the main building may be purchased in the main office.

Parking permits for juniors and seniors may be purchased by mail.  Students will need to submit a request on SPAN.  If space permits, sophomore parking permits may be sold to students in good standing.  Parking permits will not be sold to students with outstanding financial obligations to the school until the fee or fine owed has been cleared.  To purchase a permit, students must submit a request on SPAN, then mail a check, a copy of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License, a copy of the registration card for any vehicles to be parked on campus and the High School Parking Regulations form signed by a parent.  The cost of the parking permit is $120.00.  No student may park on campus without a valid parking permit.

Students/parents should retrieve an off-campus lunch application through the “Student Parent Access Network” (SPAN).  The website address is http://span.wcpss.net.  Have the form notarized and send the form to Mr. Powell at Millbrook High School.  A self-addressed stamped envelope must be provided in order to receive the permit through the mail.  August 13, 2007 through August 15, 2007 parents may choose to come to Millbrook to complete the application process, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Students with completed paperwork may come to campus August 22 through August 24 from 3-5 p.m. to pick up their passes.

Please remember to follow the WCPSS dress code policy.  My hope is that you will take this policy seriously.  Routine and consistent adherence to the policy means that proper dress will become our students’ standard.  Students who wait for rides after 3:00 must wait in the Wildcat Academy lot or by the Wildcat den.  Students are not to wait for rides in front of the school.  We have new lunch time processes we want everyone to understand.  Between the hours of 10:30-12:45 (the third period lunch block) no cars can leave or enter from the front entrance.  All students and guests should enter and exit on Dixie Forest.  This small change will help us better supervise our lunch time traffic.

We are proud of Millbrook and the many traditions that our students so proudly protect.  Our athletic teams, Spirit Halls, Winterfest, theatre and dance performances are just a few examples of our Wildcat Pride.  We are glad you are a part of our school’s rich and respected history.

Sincerely,
