August 10, 2006
Dear Millbrook Students and Parents,
If you have driven by our school this summer, you may have wondered if the school will be ready for your arrival. The answer is absolutely. The parking lots are completed; the athletic field is nearly finished. Our 200 and 100 buildings have not changed, nor have our pods. We are more than ready to begin the 2006 – 2007 school year.
The first day of school is Friday, August 25, 2006. Give yourselves extra time if you drive or carpool to school to get use to our traffic flow. Please note that first period class begins at 7:25A.M. The school day ends at 2:18P.M. Information related to the opening of school is included in this packet. The purpose of this mailing is to help you be well informed and ready for school on the first day. There is a lot of work to be done and every day counts.
Your class schedule is enclosed. Please review it now to insure it is correct. Changes will be made in your schedule for the following reasons only:
- The student is in a course for which he/she does not have the required prerequisites.
- The student is in a course that he/she has already passed.
- The student has a schedule conflict that was not resolved before schedules were printed.
- The student is in a course as a result of an error in the input of a course number.
- The student does not have a schedule that fills four (4) periods.
If your schedule has one of the errors listed above, please make an appointment immediately with your counselor by calling 850-8807. Until your schedule conflict is resolved, you will need to follow your schedule as written.
An informal Schedule Walk Through will be held on Thursday, August 24 from 4:00 – 6:00PM. Students and parents may tour the buildings to locate classrooms and ask questions. Student guides, counselors, and administrators will be available to assist you. Parents of students who are new to Millbrook High are invited to a brief New Parent Orientation in the lower cafeteria. The first orientation will be 4:10-4:20P.M and the second orientation will be 5:00-5:10P..M. You will have an opportunity to meet counselors and administrators who will be working with you during your time at MHS.
The annual Fall Open House will be on Thursday, September 21 at 6:30P.M. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend this important event that allows parents the opportunity to walk through their student’s daily schedule and meet the teachers and discuss briefly classroom activities.
During the first week of school two important handbooks will be distributed to all students. Teachers will be devoting a portion of class time to review the information contained in these documents, and parents are asked to read both handbooks when your child brings them home.
- The 2006-2007 Millbrook High School Student Handbook contains the calendar of events for the entire school year along with a wealth of information specific to Millbrook’s personnel, practices, policies and procedures. This is an important handbook to keep readily accessible throughout the year for reference on a wide range of topics.
- The 2006-2007 Wake County Public School System Student/Parent Handbook contains information regarding our school system’s policies and procedures that directly affect students, parents, and staff members.
One other handbook will be distributed in September to assist all students. The MHS Planning Guide contains important information compiled by our Student Services Team to address specific needs such as: Graduation Requirements, Career Interests, Year-to-Year Planning, calendars, College Planning Transcript Policy, employment, Driver’s Education plus much more.
Only students who have purchased MHS locks for $5.00 each will be issued lockers. ALL OTHER LOCKS WILL BE REMOVED. Locks may be purchased during the Schedule Walk Through on August 24 or during lunch periods the first week of school and throughout the year. Lockers in the 200 building are for freshman only and may be purchased from Ms. Hale in Room 205. Locks for the Pods and 800 building may be purchased from Ms. Deschaines in Room 802-11.
Parking permits for juniors and seniors may be purchased by mail now or in the Administration Office during regular business hours beginning August 25. If space permits, sophomore parking permits may be sold to students in good standing following the end of the first grading period. Parking permits will not be sold to students with outstanding financial obligations to the school until the fee or fine owed has been cleared. To purchase a permit, students must present a valid North Carolina Driver’s License, the registration card for any vehicles to be parked on campus and a parking permit request signed by a parent. The cost of the parking permit is $120.00. No student may park on campus without a valid parking permit.
Students/parents should retrieve an off-campus lunch application through the “Student Parent Access Network” (SPAN). The website address is http://span.wcpss.net. Have the form notarized and send the form to Mr. Fisher at Millbrook High School. A self-addressed stamped envelope must be provided in order to receive the permit through the mail. Beginning August 21, 2006 parents may choose to come to Millbrook to complete the application process, Monday – Thursday, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. using computers in the media center. Students must have their passwords to access their accounts.
Please remember to follow the WCPSS dress code policy. My hope is that you will take this policy seriously. Routine and consistent adherence to the policy means that proper dress will become a part of our students’ routines.
This year the many rich Millbrook traditions that define our school will continue but will be different as we transition to our new buildings. Spirit Halls, Winterfest and theatrical productions will now be held in new spaces. These traditions contribute to our sense of school pride and connect the generations of Millbrook families. I am glad you will be a part of our legacy!
Sincerely,
Dana King
