From the Principal’s Desk:
August 9, 2012

Dear Millbrook Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2012 - 2013 school year.  We are excited and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of over 2600 of you who represent our student body.  “Step inside and feel the pride” all who are now Wildcats.

The first day of school is Monday, August 27, 2012.  Give yourselves extra time if you drive or carpool to school to get familiar with our traffic flow.  Please note that first period class begins at 7:25AMThe school day ends at 2:20 PM.  Information related to the opening of school is included in this packet.  The purpose of this mailing is to help you be well informed and ready for school on the first day.  There is a lot of work to be done and every day counts.  Our first early release day will be Friday, September 21.

If your student will be riding the bus to school, please refer to our website http://mhs.wcpss.net.  The most up to date route information is posted there.  This information may change between now and August 27 so check back regularly.

Beginning August 13, 2012 refer to SPAN to check your class schedule.  Please review it to insure it is correct.  Changes will be made in your schedule for the following reasons only:

  • The student is in a course for which he/she does not have the required prerequisites.
  • The student is in a course that he/she has already passed.
  • The student has a schedule conflict that was not resolved before schedules were printed.
  • The student is in a course as a result of an error in the input of a course number.
  • The student does not have a schedule that fills four (4) periods.

If your schedule has one of the errors listed above, please submit a schedule change request online at span.wcpss.net.  A paper copy of your schedule will be available on the first day of school.

An informal Schedule Walk Through  will be held on Wednesday, August 22 from 4:00 – 6:00PM.  Students and parents may tour the buildings to locate classrooms and ask questions.  Student guides, counselors, and administrators will be available to assist you.  Parents of students who are new to Millbrook High are invited to a brief New Parent Orientation in the auditorium.  The first orientation will be 4:10-4:20PM and the second orientation will be 5:00-5:10PM.  You will have an opportunity to meet counselors and administrators who will be working with you during your time at MHS.

The annual Fall Open House will be on Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30PM.  Mark your calendars now and plan to attend this important event that allows parents the opportunity to walk through their student’s daily schedule, meet the teachers, and discuss briefly classroom activities.

During the first week of school two important handbooks will be distributed to all students.  Teachers will be devoting a portion of class time to review the information contained in these documents and parents are asked to read both handbooks when your child brings them home.

  • The 2012-2013 Millbrook High School Student Handbook contains the calendar of events
for the entire school year along with a wealth of information specific to Millbrook’s personnel, practices, policies and procedures.  This is an important handbook to keep readily accessible throughout the year for reference on a wide range of topics.
  • The 2012-2013 Wake County Public School System Student/Parent Handbook contains information regarding our school system’s policies and procedures that directly affect students, parents, and staff members.

Only students who have rented MHS locks for $5.00 each will be issued lockers.  ALL OTHER LOCKS WILL BE REMOVED.  Locks may be rented during the Schedule Walk Through on August 22nd or during lunch periods the first week of school and throughout the year.  Locks may be rented from Ms. Cooper in the attendance office.

Parking permits for juniors and seniors may be purchased using a credit or debit card online at http://osp.osmsinc.com/wakenc .  To purchase a permit, students must fill in the vehicle information on SPAN and then mail in a copy of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License, a copy of the registration card for any vehicles to be parked on campus, a copy of the receipt if paid online, the High School Parking Regulations form signed by the student and parent and a self-addressed stamped envelope.  If you prefer to send a check or money order make it out to Millbrook High School and enclose that with the above information.   The cost of the parking permit is $170.00.  No student may park on campus without a valid parking permit.  If space permits, sophomore parking permits may be sold to students in good standing second semester.  Parking permits will not be sold to students with outstanding financial obligations to the school until the fee or fine owed has been cleared.

Juniors/seniors should retrieve an off-campus lunch application through SPAN.  The website address is http://span.wcpss.net.  The easiest way to get an off-campus lunch pass is to have the form notarized at your bank or notary and send to the attention of Mr. Jordan at Millbrook High School.  A self-addressed stamped envelope must be provided in order to receive the pass through the mail.  On August 22 before the schedule walk through, parents may choose to come to Millbrook to complete the application process.  Students with completed paperwork may come to campus after August 22 from 2 - 4 p.m. to pick up their passes.  Beginning August 27th, passes can be picked up in the attendance office during the first 15 minutes of each lunch.  Students new to Millbrook or who did not have their picture taken last year must come to the attendance office to get their pictures taken during the first fifteen minutes of their designated lunch period after September 5.  Expect a 72 hour turnaround.

Please remember to follow the WCPSS dress code policy.  Routine and consistent adherence to the policy means that proper dress will become our students’ standard.

Students who wait for rides after 3:00 must wait in the Wildcat Academy lot or by the Wildcat Den.  Students are not to wait for rides in front of the school.  We have a lunch time process we want everyone to understand.  Between the hours of 10:30-1:00 (the third period lunch block) no cars can leave or enter from the front entrance.  The Dixie Forest entrance should be used by all traffic during this time.

We are proud of Millbrook and the many traditions that our students so proudly protect.  Though 2012 was a great year for students, and our school, know the Class of 2013 will make this year even better!  Our athletic teams, IB programmes, Winterfest, theatre and dance performances are just a few examples of our Wildcat Pride.  We are glad you are a part of our school’s rich and respected history.

Sincerely,

Dana King
